NEW YORK — TAP Air Portugal (TP) has chosen John F. Kennedy International Airport’s (JFK) new Terminal 6 (T6) as its future base and plans to move during the terminal’s phase-one opening in late 2026.
TAP, serving the New York market for over 50 years, currently operates daily nonstop flights from JFK to Lisbon (LIS) with Airbus A330neo and A321neo aircraft. Operations will continue as usual until the transition to Terminal 6.
This relocation will position TP alongside its codeshare partner JetBlue (B6) and several Star Alliance carriers expected to operate from Terminal 6, including Air Canada (AC), ANA (NH), Avianca (AV), Lufthansa (LH), and SWISS (LX), according to JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the consortium developing and operating the terminal.
Overview of Terminal 6 and its significance at JFK
Terminal 6 is a central component of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s US$19 billion JFK redevelopment, which includes two new terminals, upgraded facilities, a new ground transportation center, and redesigned roadways.
The Port Authority describes T6 as a 1.2 million-square-foot project developed by JFK Millennium Partners, with the first gates opening this year and the facility built out in phases. You can check out the T6 build in the video-tour above from a year and a half ago. We'll be sure to attend its opening this year.
According to JMP, Terminal 6 will feature a digital-first design and efficient passenger flow, with a short walk from the TSA exit to the gates, expanded self-service bag drop, and significant new retail, dining, and lounge spaces.
Terminal 6 is expected to connect directly with Terminal 5, forming a larger north-side complex. Co-locating codeshare and alliance partners can reduce the risk of missed connections, streamline passenger transfers, and enhance operational resilience, particularly during peak international arrival and departure periods.
