SEATTLE — The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified the Boeing 737-7, clearing the smallest member of the 737 MAX family to move toward customer deliveries after a flight-test and analysis program that began in 2018.
The regulator granted Boeing an amended type certificate for the 737-7 design, Boeing announced Monday. The FAA also added the model to Boeing Production Certificate No. 700, allowing the company's approved production system to manufacture the variant in conformity with its certified design.
Boeing and Southwest Airlines (WN), the launch customer, are preparing the first aircraft for delivery. The manufacturer did not announce a handover date or identify when Southwest expects to place the type into passenger service.
The amended type certificate approves the 737-7's design as an additional model under Boeing's existing 737 type certificate. It is distinct from the airworthiness certificate that must be issued for each completed aircraft before delivery.
The FAA describes type certification as its finding that an aircraft design complies with applicable airworthiness, noise, fuel-venting, and exhaust-emissions standards. Adding the 737-7 to Boeing's production certificate separately recognizes that the company's production system can build aircraft that conform to that approved design.
Those decisions remove the principal U.S. regulatory barriers to delivery, but they do not by themselves put the aircraft into airline service. Boeing must finish customer aircraft in their approved configuration, and Southwest must complete its own acceptance, training, maintenance, and operational-readiness work.
Boeing said the certification program included more than 1,000 hours of flight and ground testing, along with system-safety analysis and human-factors reviews. The work also covered an updated engine anti-ice system developed after testing identified a potential overheating condition.
As recently as July 16, Boeing reported that certification deliverables were 95% complete after 441 flights and 686 flight-test hours. At that point, the remaining work included final approval of the engine anti-ice solution and the last program submissions to the FAA.
The 737-7's approval follows a prolonged development period. Flight testing began in 2018, before the global 737 MAX grounding, the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent changes to certification scrutiny and requirements extended the program's timeline.
The 737-7 is designed for 135 to 160 passengers in a two-class layout and has a Boeing-advertised range of up to 3,800 nautical miles. Its smaller capacity gives operators a MAX-family replacement for older Boeing 737-700 aircraft on markets that do not require the larger 737-8 or 737-9.
That role is particularly important to Southwest, whose fleet planning has long paired the 737-7 with the larger 737-8. The airline's April 2026 purchase-agreement amendment listed 256 firm 737-7 aircraft, although the filing said updated delivery guidance would be provided separately.
Southwest had already substituted numerous delayed 737-7 positions for 737-8s while certification remained pending. FAA approval now gives the airline access to the smaller variant for future fleet renewal, but the operational effect will depend on Boeing's delivery sequence and Southwest's induction schedule.
The 737-7 is the third passenger model in the current MAX family to obtain FAA certification, following the 737-8 and 737-9. The larger 737-10 remains in the certification process.
Boeing recently completed the 737-10's final planned certification flight, but remaining safety assessments and FAA review still separate that model from approval. Boeing continues to target 737-10 certification in 2026 and first delivery in 2027; those remain company expectations rather than FAA-confirmed dates.
For the 737-7, the next visible milestone is the first customer handover. Boeing's announcement confirms that preparations are underway, but until the manufacturer and Southwest publish a schedule, the timing of delivery and passenger service remains open.
