ZIPAIR to Double Fleet Size With Dreamliner Aircraft

DALLAS — ZIPAIR Tokyo (ZG) announced on March 19, 2025, that it to double its fleet size by 2027 by introducing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

ZIPAIR, a low-cost carrier (LCC) under Japan Airlines (JL), was founded in July 2018. The LCC commenced operations with two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft in June 2020 out of Tokyo-Narita International Airport (NRT) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to operate passenger flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in place, the low-cost carrier operated freight-only flights on its first route to Bangkok (BKK).

ZIPAIR inaugurated its passenger flights to Bangkok later that October. The carrier subsequently launched flights to Seoul, Honolulu, and Singapore and added a third aircraft to its fleet in 2021 by transferring a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from its parent company, Japan Airlines.

The airline currently operates a full 290-seater Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet, with a current fleet size of 8 aircraft, to 10 international destinations worldwide. Six of the current aircraft are transferred from JL and reconfigured to ZG configuration and specification. ZG currently utilizes only two Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, brand-new deliveries from Boeing.

ZIPAIR expects to take delivery of 2 more aircraft by 2026, making it a strong fleet of 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. This will allow it to introduce more new routes and expand further. All the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft are fitted with 18 business class seats and 272 economy class seats, totaling 290 seats.

The LCC plans to introduce the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into its fleet in 2027. ZG will utilize its parent company’s aircraft to modify and reconfigure its interior and specifications. For its network expansion, ZG aims to double its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft fleet to 10 by the early 2030s.

ZIPAIR will determine the seating configuration onboard its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft closer to the date.
