Wizz Air Expands Budapest Routes, Frequencies

DALLAS – European LLC Wizz Air (W6) has announced a significant expansion of its Budapest-based operations, introducing four new direct flight routes and increasing frequencies on several existing popular destinations.

To support this expansion, W6 says it will grow its Budapest-based fleet to 17 aircraft. The LCC anticipates that these planes will transport nearly 7 million passengers to and from the Hungarian capital in 2024, marking a significant boost in local air traffic.

Starting October, travelers will be able to fly directly from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) to Genoa, Italy, and Girona, Spain. The airline will also launch a new route to Marrakesh, Morocco, expanding its reach into North Africa. In December, a fourth new route will connect Budapest with Memmingen in southern Germany.

Frequency Boost

In addition to these new destinations, W6 plans to boost flight frequencies to several key cities. Passengers will see more options for flights to Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Milan, Berlin, Madrid, Athens, and Glasgow. This increase in service is expected to enhance connectivity and provide more flexibility for both business and leisure travelers.

The expansion is substantial, with the Hungarian LCC projecting a more than 30% increase in its BUD capacity during the upcoming winter season compared to the previous year. This growth is expected to further solidify the airline's market leadership in Hungary, pushing its market share to an impressive 41%.

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
