DALLAS — Turkish Airlines (TK) resumed its flights to Libya’s second-largest city, Benghazi, after a 10-year hiatus earlier this week.
The Istanbul-based airline announced that the route would be operated by a Boeing 737-800, offering three weekly frequencies on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.
Flight TK641 is scheduled to depart from Istambul Airport (IST) at 09:15 and reach Benina International Airport (BEN) at 10:50. The return flight, TK642, will depart from BEN at 12:50 and arrive at IST at 16:10.
As Benghazi becomes the 64th destination in Africa, TK now connects more destinations across Africa than any other airline. In 2015, security concerns caused by the Civil war in Libya closed all flights to the country.
Turkish Airlines resumed flights to Tripoli last year, and the newly launched Benghazi route marks another step in the airline’s expansion efforts.
Comments from Turkish Airlines CEO
The airline CEO, Bilal Ekşi, showed great enthusiasm about the return to Benghazi and the reestablishment of historic ties. “We foresee that the strong investments in the region will further boost the continent’s tourism and trade potential.”, he added.
With evolving market conditions and increasing demand, TK aims to add more destinations to the network. The airline currently runs a promotional campaign offering reduced flight prices, as published in the press release, to welcome the relaunch of this route.
