FRANKFURT — The Lufthansa Group (LH) has placed a sizable order for 20 new widebody aircraft valued at US$7.7 billion.
The Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG approved the purchase at a meeting held on Monday, following an Executive Board decision.
The company will renew its long-haul fleet with more efficient aircraft. The order includes ten Airbus A350-900s and ten Boeing 787-9s.
Deliveries are scheduled between 2032 and 2034. Including these aircraft, the Lufthansa Group’s aircraft order book now stands at 232 aircraft.
Fleet renewal
Starting in 2032, these new widebody jets will replace older aircraft models still operating in the group. However, LH has not yet stated which airlines (in the group) will receive the new aircraft.
Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Carsten Spohr, said that the purchase of these planes represents an investment in fleet modernization and sustainability.
Offering more efficiency
There were key considerations behind the new aircraft for LH. Fleet standardization is expected to reduce operational complexity and lower maintenance costs.
Lufthansa also expects the move to create operational efficiencies, including crew licensing and spare parts management.
The A350 and 787 models also consume less fuel and produce lower emissions than the aircraft they will replace.
