American Airlines Halts New York Flights to Cancún

DALLAS — American Airlines (AA) has announced a surprise two-month suspension of all flights from New York JFK to Cancún International Airport (CUN).

This hiatus will occur from September to November, potentially disrupting plans for sun-seekers, though it won't impact those traveling later in the winter during Cancún's high season.

American Airlines uses a variety of aircraft to fly to Cancún, Mexico, including the Boeing 787-8 and 777-200.

Reasons for the Summer Suspension

American cited the need to adjust its capacity, with an overall growth rate expected to be 5% lower in the second half of the year, as the reason for this decision.

Additionally, according to traveloffpath.com, Cancún's recent moderate performance has also contributed to this temporary suspension. The travel news outlet states, "Cancun traffic is slightly down this fall, with Mexico as a whole seeing a 1.6% decrease in international traffic during the upcoming shoulder season."

Putting aside the issue of sargassum,  the "foul-smelling" algae that has recently invaded Cancún beaches, the Mexico's prized tourist destination is still poised for another record-breaking year when winter season arrives in the U.S. and abroad.
