AirAsia X to Position Bahrain as a Mid-haul Hub

BAHRAIN — AirAsia X (D7) is implementing its medium-haul expansion plan by creating a strategic hub in Bahrain that will link Asia with the Middle East, Europe, and Australia.

The plan comes after a D7 Letter of Intent in November 2025 with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, and moving away from a sole-hub strategy based in Southeast Asia.

Bahrain as a Strategic Bridge

AirAsia X's selection of Bahrain, presumably at Bahrain International Airport (BAH), aims to leverage the country's strategic location at the center of traffic flows and its well-established aviation facilities. The D7 hub aims to promote connectivity to long-haul destinations while facilitating the movement of passengers and cargo across different regions.

The plan has been described as conducive because it takes into account the country's economic vision, particularly through the development of tourism and logistical ties, as well as the expansion of employment in the aviation sector.

Network Development, Fleet Strategy

There has been a planned growth strategy to accompany this expansion. This growth strategy has been emphasized to be focused on fleet expansion and optimization. There has also been an emphasis on developing new routes and hubs to improve overall connectivity.

There has been a focus on strengthening ancillary revenues and digital capabilities as part of a larger transformation beyond recovery.

Regional Impact, Future Outlook

This Bahrain hub is expected to support further growth potential for the parent group's ecosystem, including cargo and maintenance services.

By establishing additional long-haul hubs, D7 hopes to enrich the diversity and strength of the structural network while further solidifying its position as a low-cost, long-haul airline.
