Wizz Air Further Suspends Routes Out of Debrecen

DALLAS – Wizz Air (W6) is again suspending flights from its base in Debrecen International Airport (DEB). This time, the turn of the Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)-DEB route will only be available until October 5.

According to the press release issued by the Hungarian low-cost airline, the route will be permanently suspended. Launched less than a year ago, in December 2023, it has yet to bring the desired volumes for the airline.

The DEB-London (LTN) route will also experience a decrease in weekly frequency, with three flights per week instead of five starting in November 2024. The FCO-Budapest (BUD) route remains operational, with two weekly flights connecting the two European capitals.

Burgas, Larnaca, Cyprus

On the other hand, Burgas in Bulgaria, launched in 2024 as a seasonal destination, has been reconfirmed for summer 2025; flights will be available from June.

There are also new developments for Cyprus and Larnaca, which will be converted to summer seasonal destinations. Flights will be suspended next October before resuming in the summer 2025 period.

New flights to Antalya (AYT) and Corfu (CFU) will also be available in summer 2025.

Goodbye Debrecen

The FCO suspension see W6 continue to move operations away from Debrecen, the low-cost carrier's historic base since its origins. News from July of this year affecting the base stated that all W6 aircraft in DEB would be relocated to Budapest (BUD).

This decision marked the airline's final detachment from DEB, anticipated by the gradual cancellation of numerous flights since 2023, when routes to Paris (BVA), Eindhoven (EIN), Brussels (BRU), and Istanbul (IST) were removed.

Debrecen Airport LTD, the company in charge of managing DEB, announced that it plans to cope with the Hungarian low-cost carrier's exit by approaching other airlines to be able to give connections to the city and make the destination flourish again.
