IndiGo Intends to Launch Flights into Europe

DALLAS – India’s largest airline, low-cost carrier (LCC) IndiGo (6E) looks set to launch flights to Europe. This is because the airline is currently recruiting for key positions in London (LON), Paris (PAR) and Amsterdam (AMS).

The Economic Times reports that 6E has opened vacancies for airport manager and chief security officer roles at these outstations. The LCC is looking to fill these roles before the upcoming summer season.

By recruiting for these key positions in three European capitals, 6E signals its intention to launch services to these cities. The carrier is thus planning to expand its route network by adding new long-haul services to LON, PAR and AMS.

Additionally, the start date for these roles suggests that the LCC will operate services between India and Europe for the upcoming summer.

Expansion into Europe

The airline, which launched operations in August 2006, has thus far focused mainly on domestic and regional operations. 6E currently flies to 126 destinations across India, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia.

The launch of these new European services will be 6E’s first foray into Europe. That said, expansion into Europe will allow 6E to compete with other carriers operating services between India and Europe.

It is reported that 6E will operate flights on these European routes with leased widebody aircraft. The airline will operate these routes with aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic (N0).

In fact, 6 E plans to wet lease up to six Boeing 787s from N0, for its expansion into Europe. These aircraft will be leased in the interim, while 6E establishes itself on these new long-haul routes.

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
