DALLAS — The International Airlines Group (IAG) has increased its order for Boeing 737 MAX aircraft by 10 planes by exercising its option for additional firm orders. The exact type of the aircraft has not been specified. The new aircraft are expected to be delivered by 2028 and 2029.
With this latest increase, IAG now holds firm orders for 60 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.
The new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft are expected to join Vueling’s (VY) fleet. According to Planespotters.net, Vueling currently operates an all-Airbus fleet consisting of 6 Airbus A319, 93 Airbus A320, 17 Airbus A320neo, 18 Airbus A321, and 4 Airbus A321neo. This makes the introduction of Boeing aircraft particularly notable, as it marks a potential diversification away from a long-standing Airbus-only narrowbody strategy
The decision is significant for Boeing, as it marks a breakthrough into a fleet historically dominated by Airbus's narrow-body jets. For International Airlines Group and Vueling (VY) in particular, this move marks a step toward diversifying their fleets, reducing reliance on a single aircraft manufacturer and improving their bargaining leverage with major aircraft suppliers.
International Airlines Group remains one of Europe’s most important airline groups. Its portfolio includes British Airways (BA), Iberia (IB), Aer Lingus (EI), Vueling (VY), and LEVEL (LL), giving it a strong presence across Europe, transatlantic routes, and low-cost markets.
