ZURICH — Swiss carrier Edelweiss (WK) has begun the transition to a more modern narrowbody fleet with the arrival of its first Airbus A320neo. On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the airline held a ceremony at Zurich Airport (ZRH) to christen the new aircraft, which bears the registration HB-JDB, and Airways was there for the occasion.
The aircraft was officially named "Hoch-Ybrig," marking a technical shift for the airline’s short- and medium-haul operations. The move to the A320neo brings more modern engine technology to the fleet, resulting in better fuel efficiency and a reduced noise footprint compared to the previous generation.

Alpine roots on a global stage
The name fits perfectly into the "Where Edelweiss is at home" tradition. Since 2016, the airline has named its aircraft after Swiss regions where the iconic alpine flower grows in the wild. It’s a thoughtful way to carry a piece of Swiss identity to every destination on their map.
The naming ceremony on the Zurich tarmac brought together Edelweiss CCO Patrick Heymann and Wendelin Keller, Chairman of Hoch-Ybrig AG. They were joined by several regional officials from the Canton of Schwyz, celebrating the bridge between the high-altitude region and the airline’s international network.

Fleet renewal
The introduction of HB-JDB is the first phase of a broader narrowbody overhaul. Edelweiss is currently executing a renewal program with the goal of integrating a total of six Airbus A320neo aircraft by 2028.
