PARIS – De Havilland Canada announced two key developments during the first day of the Paris Air Show: the sale of a Dash 8-400 aircraft to Barrick Gold for its Reko Diq mining operations in Pakistan, and Manitoba’s intent to purchase three De Havilland Canadair 515 (DHC 515) waterbombers for wildfire firefighting.
Dash 8-400 for Barrick Gold
The Dash 8-400 will support Barrick’s Reko Diq Mining Company (RDMC) in Balochistan, Pakistan. Reko Diq is a major copper and gold mining project backed by international financing, targeting production start around 2028. The site’s remote location and limited infrastructure create logistical challenges.
Barrick’s acquisition aims to address these challenges by utilizing the Dash 8-400’s short takeoff and landing capabilities, as well as its suitability for operating in rugged terrain, to transport personnel and cargo efficiently. This marks the Dash 8-400’s first operation in Pakistan.
Manitoba’s DHC 515 Waterbombers
Separately, Manitoba plans to purchase three DHC 515 amphibious firefighting aircraft. The DHC 515 builds on De Havilland’s legacy with the CL-215 and CL-415 models. The purchase responds to the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires linked to climate change.
The waterbombers are built entirely in Canada, supporting domestic aerospace manufacturing and skilled labor, and are funded through provincial budgets, aligning with federal efforts to strengthen wildfire response. The decision underscores a broader need to modernize firefighting resources and reflects growing demand across North America for advanced aerial firefighting platforms.
De Havilland Canada’s deals announced today reflect targeted responses to industry-specific demands. The Dash 8-400 supports remote mining operations where infrastructure is limited, and the DHC 515 addresses wildfire suppression needs heightened by climate trends.
Both acquisitions highlight the company’s role in delivering aircraft tailored to critical logistical and emergency response functions.
