Singapore Changi Airport Grows 15% in 2024

DALLAS — Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) has reported a 15% growth in passenger movements in 2024 after handling 67.7 million passengers last year. This figure is 99.1% higher than in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic when 68.3 million passengers were moved.

December 2024 was the busiest month at SIN, with 6.41 million passengers recorded. This was the first time monthly traffic exceeded 6 million since the pandemic, and it was similar to December 2019, when 6.41 million passengers passed through the airport.

Changi Airport Group shared that last year’s busiest day was December 21, 2024, just before Christmas, when the airport recorded 226,000 passenger movements.

Around 366,000 flight movements in Changi were reported in 2024, an increase from 328,000 in 2023, which signifies an 11.5% growth from the previous year. However, it was still around 16,000, shy of the pre-pandemic level of 382,000, as reported in 2019.

North Asia was reported to be the fastest-growing region in 2024, increasing by 40% compared to the previous year. China became SIN’s top source in 2024, up from sixth place the previous year. Following China are Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand.

Changi’s busiest route in 2024 is Kuala Lumpur. Bangkok, Jakarta, Bali, and Hong Kong follow behind. Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Bali retained their first four positions in 2023 as popular tourist destinations among Singaporeans. Hong Kong, however, moved up from 8th to 5th as the city’s top five busiest routes in 2024.

In 2024, SIN welcomed eight new passenger airlines: Aero Dili (8G), AirAsia Cambodia (KT), Air Canada (AC), Air Japan (JL), Loong Air (GJ), Peach Aviation (MM), Tianjin Airlines (GS), and West Air (PN). These airlines enhanced connectivity to and from Singapore from Dili (Timor-Leste), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Vancouver (Canada), Tokyo-Narita (Japan), Wenzhou (China), Osaka-Kansai (Japan), Guiyang (China), and Lhasa (via Chongqing, China).

Last year, SIN added 11 new links from Singapore, connecting Broome, Brussels, Kertajati, Malacca, Phu Quoc, Vancouver, Guiyang, Lhasa, Linyi, Quanzhou, and Wenzhou to Singapore.

In addition to the new cities being served, SIN also launched flights to London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) and Subang Airport (SZB) in the city center of Kuala Lumpur, enhancing connectivity and providing travelers with more options when flying to those cities.

Changi Airport has announced at least two new routes to be served in 2025. In March, Jetstar will commence flights to Labuan Bajo, a fishing town located at the western end of the island of Flores in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. In June, Scoot will commence flights to Vienna, the capital of Austria.

In addition to passenger movement growth in 2024, SIN also handled 1.99 million tonnes of airfreight, a 14.6% increase from the previous year. In 2024, two new freighter airlines, Shandong Airlines (SC) and Air Incheon (KJ), commenced service to Singapore, connecting Singapore to Shenzhen and Seoul (via Haikou), respectively.

As of January this year, SIN is connected by 100 airlines operating over 7,400 weekly scheduled flights, linking Singapore to over 170 cities in around 50 countries worldwide. When the new Terminal 5 begins operating in mid-2030, SIN is expected to be connected to more than 200 cities.
