BANGKOK — VietJet Air (VJ) has officially taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8 aircraft, marking the start of a significant fleet upgrade across the group. The new aircraft arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) on November 23, becoming the first unit handed over from VietJet’s long-standing order for two hundred Boeing 737 family aircraft.
The delivery represents an important step for VietJet Thailand, which is set to receive 50 Boeing aircraft under this agreement. The new fleet will support the airline’s expansion in the Thai market and strengthen its regional connectivity across the Asia Pacific.
Aircraft Capabilities and Efficiency Gains
CFM International LEAP-1B engines power the 737-8 and feature an improved aerodynamic design that delivers lower fuel burn and reduced emissions. Boeing states that the aircraft can cut carbon emissions by as much as twenty percent compared to previous-generation narrowbody types. Noise levels are also significantly lower, which aligns with the region's tighter airport and environmental requirements.
The aircraft’s range of around 6,570 kilometers allows VietJet to explore new city pairs. This may include routes deeper into South Asia or secondary markets where demand is rising but still not enough to justify larger aircraft.
Initial Route Deployment
VietJet Thailand plans to introduce the 737-8 on domestic services first. The aircraft is scheduled to enter commercial operations between Bangkok (BKK) and Chiang Mai (CNX). An international service from Bangkok to Cam Ranh (CXR) is also expected to follow in December. These early deployments will allow crews and engineering teams to familiarise themselves with the new type before the fleet grows further.

Mixed Fleet Approach
While the Thai subsidiary transitions to Boeing narrowbody aircraft, VJ’s Vietnam-based operations continue to rely on an all Airbus fleet. This results in a dual-fleet structure across the group. Although this approach requires additional planning for training, maintenance, and logistics, VietJet has stated that it allows each market to tailor aircraft choices to its specific network strategy.
Broader Impact
The delivery also contributes to trade and industrial ties between Vietnam and the United States. VJ’s order, valued at US$32 billion, remains one of the most significant commercial aircraft purchases placed by a Southeast Asian airline. As passenger demand in the region recovers, the introduction of modern and fuel-efficient aircraft helps carriers like VietJet manage operating costs and improve overall performance.
Looking Ahead
The arrival of the first Boeing 737-8 marks the start of more deliveries in the coming years. VietJet Thailand’s fleet renewal will gradually reshape its short- and medium-haul operations as additional aircraft join the fleet. For the wider group, the move demonstrates a long-term commitment to strengthening capacity, enhancing sustainability, and supporting the airline’s ambition to become a noteworthy regional competitor.
