United Airlines CEO Eyes 1,000 Flights a Day at Chicago O'Hare

CHICAGO — United Airlines (UA) CEO Scott Kirby has described a vision of 1,000 flights a day at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and 15 more international destinations, Axios Chicago reported after his appearance on the Office Hours: Business Edition podcast. Neither target came with a timetable or a list of routes in the account reviewed by Airways.

Axios framed Kirby's figure as growth from United's roughly 650 daily O'Hare departures. For the summer 2026 schedule, United had originally planned about 780 daily departures before cutting that to about 650 under federal limits, CBS Chicago reported from a letter to employees. Kirby's 1,000-flight figure remains an ambition, with no announced schedule for reaching it.

The FAA's Airportwide Limit

The FAA capped O'Hare at 2,708 scheduled daily operations after airlines planned more than 3,080 arrivals and departures on peak days this summer. An operation is one takeoff or landing, so the airportwide limit cannot be compared directly with United's departure count. The agency said fewer than 60% of O'Hare arrivals and departures were on time the previous summer, and cited gate constraints, taxiway closures and air traffic control pressure.

The FAA extended the scheduling limits through October 30, 2027, saying continuing construction and airfield changes would constrain capacity. The extension does not set a date for United's proposed growth or say what capacity will be available after it expires.

Before the order was finalized, Airways examined the competing airline schedules that prompted FAA intervention.

New Gates, Separate Operating Constraints

The Chicago Department of Aviation says the 19-gate Concourse D is due for completion in late 2028 as part of ORDNext. A second concourse and the O'Hare Global Terminal are planned in later phases. Those projects would add terminal space, but the FAA's current limit also reflects airfield construction and air traffic control capacity. The airport project page does not say how many additional daily flights the new gates could accommodate.

OAG's 2026 Megahubs ranking places O'Hare fifth globally and first among airports in the Americas for international connectivity. Kirby did not identify the 15 additional destinations in the account reviewed by Airways.
