KAMPALA — Uganda's national flag carrier, Uganda Airlines (UR), has signed a deal with Boeing to purchase up to 10 new aircraft. The agreement was signed on June 10 in the presence of President Yoweri Museveni.
One notable detail is that, at the time of writing, the full breakdown of aircraft included in the deal has not yet been officially disclosed by Uganda Airlines (UR) or Boeing. The agreement includes eight passenger and two cargo aircraft, according to a post published by the Ugandan government on the social media platform X.
The two cargo aircraft, as reported by Daily Express, are a Boeing 767 and a Boeing 737, both in Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) configuration, although official details regarding the complete order remain limited.
"The fleet expansion, which includes passenger and cargo aircraft, will strengthen trade, tourism, and investment, and position Uganda as a key regional aviation hub," the government stated.
The deal is valued at approximately $984.64 million.
Uganda Airlines current fleet
According to planespotters.net, Uganda Airlines' (UR) current fleet consists of seven aircraft, including two Airbus A330-800s (featured image), one Boeing 737-800, and four CRJ-900s.
The fleet is primarily structured to serve domestic and regional demand in the short-haul market, while the A330-800 is capable of long-haul operations and can carry well over 200 passengers. However, the relatively small fleet size limits the airline’s ability to scale operations meaningfully.
An interesting detail is that the Airbus A330-800 aircraft in URs fleet are part of a very limited production run, with only 15 units ordered globally and only a handful delivered so far. The model has proven less popular among airlines compared to the larger A330-900, despite both sharing much of the same design family.
This is why the new order is significant. With the addition of 10 aircraft, the airline’s capacity would more than double, enabling it to substantially expand its network and operations.
