HANOI — Vietnamese carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways (9G) has placed an order for up to 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to become the workhorse of the new airline's widebody strategy.
The agreement marks the airline's initial direct aircraft acquisition and supports its goal of establishing Phu Quoc as the international gateway to the tourism markets of Asia, Europe, and North America.
The 787-9 will enable efficient long-range flights from Phu Quoc International Airport, allowing the carrier to introduce nonstop flights between the largest island in Vietnam and the largest destinations in the world.
The aircraft's long range and the economy of its operation offer flexibility in new long-haul markets as well as in the airline's hub-and-spoke model, which targets premium tourism flows.

Cabin amenities such as larger windows and improved cabin pressurization on the Dreamliner were designed to make passengers more comfortable during long flights. Along with lower fuel consumption rates relative to the previous generation of widebodies, the aircraft aligns with industry trends of expanding fleets based on efficiency.
The order is the biggest widebody acquisition in the history of Vietnamese airlines and a sign of the continued regional growth. As Southeast Asia is predicted to be one of the quickest-growing aviation markets, the investment will enhance connectivity and contribute to the further overall development of Phu Quoc as an integrated tourism and economic hub.
