Saudi Arabia Breaks Air Traffic Growth Record

DALLAS — Saudi Arabia has witnessed remarkable growth in its air traffic during the first half of 2024, according to the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA). The Kingdom has reported a significant growth in passenger traffic, flights, air cargo, and connectivity.

In the first half of 2024, the Kingdom experienced a 17% increase in passenger numbers, reaching a record-breaking 62 million travelers between January and June 2024. This surpasses pre-pandemic levels, demonstrating a strong recovery in air travel demand.

Flight activity also saw a 12% increase, with a total of 446,000 flights recorded in the first half of the year. Notably, the low-cost carriers (LCCs) were a key driver of this growth, with a 38% increase on international routes and a 22% increase in domestic routes.

Network Expansion, Air Cargo Growth

This period also saw a significant expansion in Saudi Arabia's air connectivity. The Kingdom's network now reaches 163 destinations, reflecting a 23% increase compared to 2023, as reported by Air Traffic Management.

Air cargo transportation also experienced an impressive upswing, achieving a historic 41% growth in the first half of 2024. Cargo volume reached 606,000 tons during this period, compared to the 430,000 tons in the same period of 2023.

A Thriving Aviation Market

The first half of 2024 has painted a positive picture for Saudi Arabia's aviation industry. The record-breaking growth in air traffic, coupled with strategic investments and sector advancements, solidify the Kingdom's position as a major aviation hub in the Middle East.

With the continued implementation of the Saudi Aviation Strategy, the Kingdom aims to be the first in the Middle East to reach 330 million annual passengers, increase air freight capacity to 4.5 million tons, and raise air connectivity to reach 250 destinations to and from Saudi airports by 2030.
