Qatar Airways Secures Stake in Virgin Australia

DALLAS — Qatar Airways Group (QR) has received approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) for its 25% stake in Virgin Australia.

This follows the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) draft ruling on February 18, signaling its intention to authorize the airlines' integrated alliance. A final decision is expected by March or April 2025, bringing VA closer to resuming long-haul international flights.

Qatar Airways’ investment will provide VA with access to the expertise and scale of a global airline, enhancing its ability to compete in domestic and international markets. Existing shareholders—Bain Capital, Virgin Group, and Queensland Investment Corporation—will retain their stakes in the airline.

Return to Long-Haul Flying in 2025

Pending approval from the International Air Services Commission (IASC), VA plans to launch direct flights to Doha from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth in June 2025, followed by Melbourne flights in December.

Qatar Airways will operate these routes using wet-leased aircraft. The expansion is expected to increase competition, drive down international fares, and contribute approximately A$3 billion to Australia’s tourism economy over five years.

Virgin Australia passengers will gain seamless access to QR's extensive global network through their alliance, with over 100 new travel connections across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Members of Virgin’s Velocity Frequent Flyer program and Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club will also benefit from expanded rewards and redemption options.

Workforce Collaboration

Following consultations with unions and aviation staff, the partnership has sparked strong interest among VA’s pilots and cabin crew for secondment opportunities with QR. This collaboration will create promotional pathways for existing employees and open new hiring opportunities.

With regulatory approvals nearing completion, the QR-VA union might just be able to reshape Australian aviation, giving Qantas (QF) a run for its money regarding global connectivity, increased competition, and significant economic benefits.
