MUNICH — Munich Airport (MUC) confirmed it will open its new Terminal 1 Pier on April 13, expanding non-Schengen capacity and introducing new premium passenger facilities as part of a major infrastructure upgrade.
Munich Airport said the €665 million pier project represents one of Bavaria’s largest active infrastructure investments and was financed entirely from the airport’s own resources. Designed to handle up to six million additional passengers annually, the new pier targets growth in non-Schengen traffic while improving efficiency and comfort for departing travelers.
Capacity, Layout
The Terminal 1 Pier extends roughly 360 meters into the west apron and spans about 95,000 square meters. The facility accommodates up to 12 short- and medium-haul aircraft or 6 widebody aircraft simultaneously. Passenger flows are distributed across six levels, with three floors dedicated to travelers.
Centralized security screening equipped with CT scanners allows passengers to keep electronics and liquids inside carry-on baggage. The pier also features expanded waiting areas, new retail and dining zones, and designated relaxation spaces. Munich Airport highlighted energy-efficient building systems as part of the terminal’s sustainability concept.
Premium Lounge Focus
A central element of the new pier is its lounge offering. Munich Airport will operate the 1,200-square-meter Airport Lounge World across two levels, providing apron and Alpine views, dining facilities, work areas, quiet zones, and a children’s play area. In parallel, Emirates will open a dedicated 900-square-meter lounge for its premium passengers.
Operational Rollout
From April 21, around 40 airlines operating non-Schengen services from Terminal 1 will move their departures to the new pier. The airport began trial operations in October, involving more than 1,500 test passengers, airline partners, ground handlers, and emergency services.
According to Munich Airport, feedback from the trials emphasized the pier’s spacious design, clear wayfinding, and updated digital processes, supporting confidence in a smooth transition to full operations.
