FRANKFURT — Lufthansa Technik has completed its 1,000th overhaul of the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine, marking a significant milestone in global engine Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO). This achievement highlights the company's expanding role in the worldwide GTF support network, developed in partnership with Pratt & Whitney.
This milestone reflects the combined efforts of facilities including EME Aero in Poland and Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey in Germany. EME Aero, a joint venture with MTU Aero Engines, services GTF-powered aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo, A220, and Embraer E-Jet, and aims to exceed 500 shop visits annually by 2028.
Initial overhaul training took place in Hamburg, with responsibilities set to expand internationally in 2024. To support heavy maintenance, mobile engine service teams in Frankfurt, Montreal, Tulsa, and Shenzhen provide on-site technical support to minimize aircraft downtime as the global GTF fleet grows.

Lufthansa Technik Factsheet
- Heavy overhaul capacity in Europe: Lufthansa Technik highlights EME Aero in Jasionka, Poland, its joint venture with MTU Aero Engines, as one of the world’s most advanced GTF service centers. EME Aero supports a full range of services, from quick turns to complete overhauls, for all GTF variants serving the A320neo, A220, and Embraer E-Jets.
- Capacity increase: Lufthansa Technik reports that EME Aero, with approximately 1,200 employees and two test stands, plans to scale to over 500 shop visits per year by 2028.
- A220 specialization in Germany: Lufthansa Technik AERO Alzey (LTAA) has specialized in the PW1500G (A220) since 2018, expanded its capacity with a 10,000 m² logistics center, and recently inducted its 300th GTF engine.
- Program development: Lufthansa Technik states that the GTF overhaul capability was established in Hamburg, where approximately 200 GTF engines were overhauled over seven years. The program was transferred to partner locations in mid-2024 to support higher production rates.
- Overhaul is not the only focus: In addition to major shop visits, Lufthansa Technik highlights Mobile Engine Services, which provide specialized work at or near customer sites. The company has established GTF capability at Frankfurt, Montreal, Tulsa, and Shenzhen to reduce downtime.
- GTF overview: Pratt & Whitney’s GTF architecture uses a gear system that allows the fan and turbine to operate at optimal speeds, improving efficiency.
- Performance claims for the GTF (manufacturer statements): Pratt & Whitney reports that the GTF delivers approximately 16% lower fuel burn, 50% lower NOx emissions compared to regulatory standards, and a 75% smaller noise footprint. The engine has been in service since early 2016.
