Lufthansa Welcomes 100th Anniversary Dreamliner

FRANKFURT — Lufthansa (LH) has welcomed a new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in Frankfurt, marking the first delivery of an aircraft painted in a unique special scheme created for the airline’s upcoming 100th-anniversary celebrations.

Boeing built and delivered the aircraft from its Everett, Washington, plant. The new Dreamliner carries the registration D-ABPU, bears the name Berlin, and serves as the lead jet for LH’s anniversary fleet.

Lufthansa is rolling out the special-anniversary fleet comprised of six aircraft painted in a commemorative design. After the Boeing 787-9 Berlin, other aircraft, including an Airbus A380, an Airbus A350-1000, an Airbus A350-900, an Airbus A320, and a Boeing 747-8, will receive the special livery through fall 2026.

Lufthansa’s Centennial Celebration, Dreamliners

Lufthansa designed this special livery by blending tradition and the future with a striking deep-blue fuselage and a prominent white crane symbol whose wings visually merge with the aircraft’s wings — turning the plane into a “flying ambassador.”

The livery features prominent “100” numerals on the left side of the fuselage, the anniversary dates “1926 | 2026” on the right, and another “100” on the underside — visible to spotters and passengers alike. This is the first of six planes in its fleet to sport the special livery. It is forecast to fly in the coming weeks.

Lufthansa ordered the 787-9 Dreamliner in March 2023 as part of its ongoing fleet renewal strategy with Boeing wide-body aircraft.

The airline operates a mixed fleet of Boeing and Airbus jets and has historically named its aircraft after cities and regions — a tradition that continues with Berlin for D-ABPU.
