Behind the London Gatwick Airport Easter Strike Action

London Gatwick Airport (LGW) is set to experience significant disruption over the Easter bank holiday weekend as several Red handling staff, including baggage handlers and check-in agents, plan to strike from Good Friday, April 18, to April 22.

Reports indicate that the strike action will affect multiple airlines, with up to 50 flights per day likely facing delays and cancellations during this period. The key issues behind the strike organized by the union are as follows.

1. Pension Scheme Mismanagement

Workers report missing and inaccurate pension payments, and some accounts lack pension entirely. Loss of retirement income is another factor contributing to this issue, where staff demand compensation for lost pension due to the Red handling negligence.

2. Delayed Salary Payments

The company delayed payments by up to 2 weeks on 3 occasions in the past year, and it was not prepared to compensate workers for the income lost during the payment delays.

3. Health, Safety Violations

Workers reported being denied a legally mandated 11-hour rest period during shifts and adequate meal breaks. Furthermore, workers' schedules were imposed without prior consultation, which increased fatigue and related health risks.

The union insists on immediate action to resolve the stated pension discrepancies, compensate affected staff, enforce safe working conditions, and implement systemic changes to ensure timely payments, adequate rest periods, and appropriate breaks.

How Can You Be Prepared as a Passenger?

  1. Stay informed:  contact your airline to be updated regarding the flight status.
  2. Know your rights: Airlines must provide meal vouchers for delays exceeding 4 hours and hotel accommodations if necessary. However, the airline has no financial obligation to offer compensation since the strike is deemed an extraordinary circumstance.
  3. Travel insurance: You can protect yourself by taking travel insurance.
  4. Document all your expenses: Keep all the receipts and costs to apply for future airline compensation.

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
