DALLAS — Korean Air (KE) will modernize its cargo facility at New York's JFK International Airport.
Opened in 2000, the terminal is indeed one of the largest cargo facilities on the US East Coast. It has a total warehouse floor area of 17,065 sqm and an annual handling capacity of 200,000 tonnes.
The airline has commissioned Lödige Industries as its partner to develop plans for a major modernisation of its JFK cargo terminal, which it says will boost service quality, operational efficiency, and the sustainability of its operations in the area.
Korean Air Cargo's Regional Manager for the New York, Washington, and Boston area, Junho Choi, said, “JFK is our gateway for cargo services along the East Coast and a key hub in our growing global network.
Modernization Details
Korean Air’s comprehensive modernization includes the introduction of a range of advanced automated systems designed to enhance productivity and strengthen industrial safety.
According to aviationbusinessnews.com, he upgrade will include installing two fully automated Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs), enabling more efficient, higher-capacity ULD handling. Fixed transfer vehicles will also be replaced with Cargo Pallet Movers for flexible ULD transport and improved space efficiency.
A total of 14 workstations will also be replaced with modern models.
Enhancements to the Cool Chain facilities form another central element of the modernisation. This includes the construction of a new refrigerated warehouse and extensive upgrades to the existing temperature-controlled facilities.
In the four current temperature-controlled warehouse areas, temperature controllers, roller conveyors, and shutters, among other components, will be renewed to ensure even greater reliability and efficiency.
“By modernising the terminal with state-of-the-art automation technology, we are ensuring long-term efficiency, higher safety standards, and increased sustainability of our operations,” Choi said.
