DALLAS — Japan Airlines (JL) announced on Wednesday that it plans to introduce 17 additional Boeing 737-8 aircraft on top of its March 21, 2023 order, bringing the total order of the Boeing 737-8 to 38. The new Boeing 737-8 aircraft is set to replace the older generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft, mainly serving domestic routes within the country.

The new Boeing 737-8 aircraft will be progressively added to the JAL fleet starting in 2026.

Aside from the Boeing 737-8, JL intends to introduce 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft into the fleet. The new aircraft will replace the aging Boeing 767 aircraft, which are mainly used on domestic routes to and from Haneda Airport. The new Airbus A321neo aircraft is expected to join the JAL fleet progressively from the financial year 2028.

Aside from the two new single-aisle aircraft that JL is introducing into the fleet to replace the aging domestic network aircraft, JL also plans to introduce 10 more Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft and 20 Airbus A350-900 for the international routes.

Japan Airlines currently operates 22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and the 10 additional Dreamliner aircraft on order will progressively join the JL fleet from the financial year 2028. JL currently operates 15 Airbus A350-900, but solely on domestic routes. The 20 new Airbus A350-900 intended for international routes will progressively join the fleet from the financial year 2027.

In addition to the 20 new Airbus A350-900 aircraft on order, JL has three domestic Airbus A350-900 and five international Airbus A350-1000. They will be progressively introduced into the JL fleet.

By introducing more state-of-the-art aircraft, JL aims to significantly improve and enhance the passenger experience. Upgrading to more fuel-efficient aircraft also shows JL’s commitment to further reducing CO2 emissions for a more sustainable future.
