In Photos: Inside the Cessna SkyCourier at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow

FARNBOROUGH — Airways joined Textron Aviation at Farnborough International Airshow 2026 for an exciting tour of its latest utility turboprop, the Cessna SkyCourier.

On static display during the airshow was the Special Missions demonstrator aircraft owned and operated by Textron Aviation, registered N408SM.

We explored the SkyCourier to learn more about its design and capabilities, before sitting down for an interview with Bob Gibbs, VP of Special Mission Sales.

SkyCourier capabilities

Announced in November 2017, the SkyCourier is a versatile single-pilot multi-mission platform built for reliability and durability. Designed with a fixed-gear, high-wing and an unpressurized cabin, the aircraft offers low operating costs and easy maintenance.

The Cessna SkyCourier is available in three configurations: cargo-only, passenger-only, or combi conversions, with the latter FAA-approved in May 2024.

The freighter variant of the aircraft features a low profile and a large 30.5-inch cargo door, which allows for quick loading of pallets and containers. The cargo hold can accommodate three LD3 containers, with a maximum payload capacity of 6,000 lbs (2,700 kg). An optional cargo loading system enables operators to roll cargo through the hold, further speeding up loading operations.

In its passenger variant, the spacious interior comfortably accommodates passengers and their baggage. Large windows provide plenty of natural light and great views, and USB ports are available at each seat.

The cabin can be reconfigured to meet various operational requirements, highlighting the aircraft's adaptability. Operators can carry up to nine passengers and cargo simultaneously in the combi configuration, further adding to the aircraft's flexibility.

Extra Features 

During winter months where greater protection is required, the SkyCourier is equipped with heated glass windshields. Optional add-ons such as wing and propeller de-ice boots and a weather radar are available.

To facilitate safe take-off and landing on unpaved or gravel runways, a gravel kit is also available as an addition. This protects the airframe from debris and further improves the aircraft's versatility.

The integrated flight deck features state-of-the-art Garmin NXi1000 technology with enhanced displays, uniquely adapted for the turboprop. Together with its clean-sheet design, the aircraft is certified for single-pilot operations.

SkyCourier Operators 

The Cessna SkyCourier is operated globally by a range of carriers including cargo and commuter airlines, and military forces.

FedEx (FX), the launch operator of the Cessna SkyCourier, holds a firm order of 50 aircraft plus up to 50 additional options, dedicated for cargo only. This continues their fleet modernization in the air freight sector, providing a faster and more economical service for their feeder network.

Everts Air (5V) operates two combi-variant aircraft for both cargo and passenger flights across Alaska. This variant proves useful for carriers to support the movement of customers and freight in rural communities.

Bob Gibbs, VP Special Missions Sales, added: 

“Those who use the combi variant frequently tend to be in remote areas where they have a lot of cargo and passengers.”

In addition, Bering Air (8E) has a fleet of four freighter aircraft, serving the remote regions of Alaska.

Western Aircraft Inc, operating under Lanai Air (LNY) in Hawaii, became the first to use the passenger variant of the SkyCourier in May 2023. The company offers luxury travel with private charter flights to customers traveling between Oahu and the island of Lanai. Utilizing its two dedicated passenger SkyCouriers, the company also operates three additional freighter variants in its fleet.

Special Missions

From aeromedical transportation in remote regions to aerial cargo drops in parachuting missions, the SkyCourier is highly versatile with various capabilities.

“In the Special Missions space for government use, they typically want a multi-role aircraft that can be quickly reconfigured,” said the VP Special Missions Sales. “That's where it fits well, and they can do passengers and air ambulance, and surveillance aircraft and troops as an example.”

In April 2026, the Belgian Air Force placed an order for five SkyCouriers to support its Special Operations Forces for troop transport, logistics, and crisis response. This marks the first military order outside the US for Textron Aviation, strengthening its presence across the global defense market.

Algerian-based Tassili Travail Aérien (TTA), a state-owned oil and gas company, celebrated its first order of two new aero-medical SkyCouriers in June 2025. Certified for medical evacuations, the aircraft allows TTA to support passenger transportation and challenging missions across Algeria.

Bob Gibbs, VP Special Missions Sales, mentioned: 

“TTA’s mission package includes the advanced Lifeport PLUS Powered Medevac System, allowing TTA to quickly switch from passenger or cargo to medevac missions.”

Delivery Outlook

As of summer 2026, the SkyCourier’s largest customer, FedEx, will continue to receive aircraft through the year and into 2027. Eventually totaling its initial order of 50 aircraft, FX remains the largest operator of the turboprop.

Textron has begun the delivery of the SkyCourier internationally, including the first of the type to Air Marshall Islands (CW) in Oceania and Leading Edge Air Services Corporation, Philippines.

Hunnu Air (MR), based in Mongolia, is expected to receive two passenger SkyCouriers in 2026. MR is also the first customer in Asia to order the type, enhancing operations in the region.

The Belgian Air Force is expected to receive its first delivery of five Cessna SkyCouriers in 2027, marking the aircraft's debut in the military market.
