IndiGo Names Athens as First A321XLR Destination

NEW DELHI IndiGo (6E) has officially announced Athens as the first city to be served with its upcoming Airbus A321XLR, marking a big step in the airline’s international expansion.

Starting in early January 2026, the carrier will launch six weekly non-stop flights between India and Greece, with three flights departing from Delhi (DEL) and three from Mumbai (BOM), subject to final regulatory approvals.

With this launch, 6E will become the only Indian airline offering direct connections to Athens (ATH). The services are planned to commence immediately after IndiGo takes delivery of India’s first A321XLR at the end of 2025.

Symbolic Milestone

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, called the selection of Athens a “symbolic milestone” for both IndiGo and Indian aviation. He highlighted the historic ties between India and Greece, noting how the new flights will also boost business, leisure, and even wedding tourism between the two nations.

“Athens as the inaugural destination for India’s first Airbus A321XLR is a milestone of India’s aviation ascent,” Elbers said. “We’re proud to be the only Indian airline to announce direct flights between India and Greece. This is a strategic step for our international growth and perfectly in sync with India’s expanding economy and tourism industry.”

IndiGo is currently India’s largest airline, operating a fleet of more than 400 aircraft and running over 2,200 daily flights across 90+ domestic and 40+ international destinations. In FY25, it carried more than 118 million customers.

What the Route Offers

The flights won’t just link two capitals. The airline states that the new connection will also offer easier access to the Greek islands, including Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete, as well as onward travel to other European cities. This aligns with the growing demand IndiGo is seeing from Indian travelers seeking leisure holidays and unique destinations.

Besides tourism, the airline views the flights as a means to promote MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and trade exchanges. India has become one of the fastest-growing outbound markets for Europe, and Greece is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for tourism and trade.

Earlier in 2025, 6E had already signalled its European ambitions by announcing non-stop wide-body services to Amsterdam and Manchester, using wet-leased Boeing 787-9s starting in July, pending regulatory clearances. These routes will feature a two-class layout — “IndiGo Stretch” premium economy plus economy — indicating that the airline is experimenting with more premium offerings as part of its long-haul strategy.

The Athens route, with the A321XLR, therefore fits neatly into this trajectory: smaller wide-bodies to northern Europe, and longer, thinner routes to southeastern Europe, all pushing IndiGo’s footprint deeper into new markets.

The Aircraft

The Airbus A321XLR is a next-generation narrowbody designed to fly longer distances, with a range of up to 8,700 km (4700 nm). For 6E, it means a deeper reach into Europe without relying on widebodies.

The cabins will include both Economy Class and IndiGoStretch – an upgraded section with more legroom, in-flight entertainment, and a more comfortable overall experience. This marks a slight shift for the airline, which has traditionally operated a single-class model.

IndiGo has not yet received the Airbus A321XLR, but expects to take delivery of the first example of the type by the end of year.

Broader Context

The Athens announcement comes as the India-Europe market grows rapidly. IndiGo already connects to several European cities via partnerships and one-stop routes, but the XLR will enable more non-stop links that were previously not possible.

The airline also indicated that Athens may not be the only XLR destination in Greece down the line. If all goes well, IndiGo aims to expand further into the country and strengthen the overall connectivity between India and Greece.

With India’s first XLR arriving soon, these flights could set the tone for a new phase of direct, cost-efficient India–Europe connectivity.
