IndiGo Places Order for 30 Airbus A350-900 Aircraft

DALLAS — Indian LCC IndiGo (6E) has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, disclosed in an exchange filing on April 24, marking the airline's entry into the wide-body space.

IndiGo says the specific configuration of the aircraft will be determined at a later stage, with deliveries expected to commence in 2027. In addition to the 30 Firm A350-900 order, the carrier also holds Purchase Rights for an additional 70 Airbus A350 Family aircraft.

This new aircraft will allow 6E to extend its reach and enhance its network connectivity, enabling passengers from various Indian cities to connect with destinations around the world on board wide-body aircraft.

The A350-900s will be equipped with Rolls Royce's Trent XWB engine, combining exceptional mission capability with the efficiency of the Trent XWB engine.

Currently, 6E operates a fleet of over 350 aircraft. In June 2023, the airline placed the largest-ever single aircraft order by any airline, ordering 500 aircraft from Airbus. As a result, the outstanding order book for A320 Family aircraft stands at nearly 1,000, which are scheduled for delivery well into the next decade. This particular order book includes a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR aircraft.

The latest order for the A350-900 aircraft will strengthen the strategic relationship between 6E and Airbus, reaching unprecedented levels in terms of depth, breadth, and size. Additionally, this marks the beginning of a new and fruitful relationship between 6E and Rolls Royce.

In 2023, 6E welcomed 100 million passengers on board its flights. As one of the fastest-growing airlines globally, this new order will further strengthen 6E's trajectory of growth, as the Indian economy is projected to become the world's third-largest by the end of this decade.
