DALLAS — Miami International Airport (MIA) has been awarded US$94 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to carry out upgrades as part of its Future-Ready Modernization in Action maintenance and capital program.
According to airport-world.com, the funds will come from a US$70 million Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant as well as a US$24 million Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG). The funds will enable these key projects, which form part of MIA’s multi-year, multi-billion-dollar modernisation program. The program is indeed designed to strengthen infrastructure, enhance passenger experience, and cater to growing passenger numbers.
“These FAA grants will support projects critical to MIA’s mission to remain one of the world’s leading global gateways for passengers and cargo while preparing for future aviation demands,” said Ralph Cutié, Director and CEO at MIA.
Facilitating Growth
The airport’s Future-Ready Modernization in Action program is a US$9 billion capital improvement plan designed to enhance nearly all aspects of MIA over the next decade. Significant changes include enhancements to the airfield and roads.
There will be improvements for runways, taxiways, and MIA’s road access to accommodate growing passenger and cargo operations. The upgrading of concourses, gates, and passenger boarding bridges will improve efficiency and comfort for airport users.
“This historic investment will help us modernise MIA to meet the needs of our growing county, create good-paying jobs, and ensure that our airport remains resilient, sustainable, and competitive for generations to come – bringing us closer to delivering a world-class, future-ready airport that will make travellers and our community proud.” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said.
