DUBAI — Dubai International Airport (DXB) sustained minor damage to a concourse during an incident on February 28, 2026, with four airport staff injured, according to the Dubai Media Office.
Officials said the incident was quickly contained, and emergency response teams were deployed immediately, as regional security tensions continued to affect aviation operations across the Gulf.
Authorities did not disclose the cause of the DXB incident. However, the timing coincided with widespread airspace closures and restrictions across several countries, limiting available routes and resulting in cancellations, diversions, and temporary suspensions, particularly at major connecting hubs.
DXB and UAE operations were briefly disrupted amid airspace restrictions. Dubai’s airport system, one of the world’s busiest for international connections, experienced significant disruption on February 28 as the UAE implemented precautionary airspace measures. These actions led to flight delays, cancellations, and rolling airline advisories.
Dubai Airports confirms via its website that " all flight operations at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC) are suspended until further notice. Passengers must not travel to the airport and are advised to contact their airline directly for the latest flight updates. We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as soon as available."
Airlines respond: suspensions, reroutes, passenger waivers
As airspace over key corridors was restricted, Reuters reported significant disruption across the region, including temporary halts by Gulf carriers and cancellations by airlines serving the Middle East.
Airlines issued the following statements and advisories:
- Qatar Airways (QR) temporarily suspended flights to and from Doha (DOH) due to the Qatari airspace closure and advised that delays are expected upon resuming operations.
- Air India (AI): suspended flights to all destinations in the Middle East, citing the developing situation and safety considerations.
- IndiGo (6E): cancelled flights to and from the Middle East during the disruption period due to evolving airspace restrictions, according to airline statements.
- Air Canada (AC) has issued a rebooking policy after DXB suspended operations amid escalating Middle East conflict.
Key operational impacts for airlines and passengers are immediate and cumulative:
- Hub connectivity breaks (missed banks and onward connections at DXB/DOH)
- Aircraft and crew displacement, resulting in irregular operations even after the airspace reopens
- Longer routings and increased fuel consumption as carriers avoid affected airspace, requiring schedule adjustments beyond the region
This is the second airport to be affected by today's escalation in the Middle East. The news follows Kuwait’s state news agency KUNA reporting that a drone targeted Kuwait International Airport (KWI), resulting in minor employee injuries and limited damage to Terminal 1 (T1).
This is a developing story. Airways will provide updates as aviation authorities and airlines release verified operational guidance.
