Delta Jets Collide on Taxiway at New York LaGuardia

NEW YORK — Two Delta Air Lines (DL) regional jets collided at low speed on a taxiway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) on Wednesday just before 10 p.m. local time, injuring a flight attendant and disrupting travel for nearly one hundred passengers.

According to the airline and airport officials, an Endeavor Air (9E) CRJ-900, Flight 5155, was taxiing for departure to Roanoke, Virginia, at approximately 9:56 p.m. local time when its wing struck the fuselage and cockpit windows of another 9E CRJ jet, Flight 5047, as the latter was taxiing to its gate after arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina.

Both CRJ-900 aircraft were operated by DL’s regional subsidiary, Endeavor Air. Onboard Flight 5155 were 32 people, while Flight 5047 carried 61, bringing the total involved to 93. No passengers suffered injuries, but one member of the cabin crew was treated for minor injuries at the scene and subsequently taken to a local hospital as a precaution, authorities said.

Video footage from the scene captured the wing of one aircraft sheared off and emergency vehicles on the tarmac intervening promptly. Passengers from both planes were safely transported by bus to the terminal and, where needed, provided hotel accommodations and rebooked on subsequent flights.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the collision.
