Copa Starts Wave of Flight Suspensions to Venezuela

DALLAS Copa Airlines (CM) has temporarily suspended all flights to and from Venezuela, effective July 31, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time.

It's important to note that the airline did not announce the flight suspension; it was the Ministry of Transport of Venezuela, due to the sudden rise of social tensions in the South American country after the re-election of the incumbent President.

In an official statement, CM explained: “Copa Airlines reaffirms its commitment to the safety and well-being of its passengers and will take all steps within its power to reduce the impact of this measure on their travel plans.”

The Panamanian national carrier serves as a vital connection between Venezuela and the rest of the Americas. From Tocumen Airport (PTY), the company currently serves five different destinations in Venezuela, including Maracaibo (MAR), Barquisimeto (BRM), Valencia (VLN), Barcelona (BLA), and of course Caracas (CCS).

LATAM Peru Also Added to the List

LATAM Peru (LP) has found itself in a very similar situation to CM, the Peruvian subsidiary of LATAM Airlines (LA). LATAM Peru has also needed to suspend all flights between the two countries following the break of diplomatic relations with Venezuela.

The damage caused to LP’s route network is significantly minor, as the carrier currently holds one single link between Lima (LIM) and Caracas (CCS), which runs daily using Airbus A320 family planes.

More Airlines May Follow Suit

The announcement that CM will halt all flights between Panama and Venezuela may not be the only one bubbling in the coming days.

The state of affairs in Venezuela can generate a wave of route suspensions to the country; major carriers serving the capital such as Air Europa (UX), Iberia (IB), Turkish Airlines (TK), and TAP Air Portugal (TP) may soon follow.

In addition, LASER Airlines (QL) announced the temporary cancellation of all services to the Dominican Republic. QL is the only major Venezuelan airline that is entirely privately owned and does not receive financial assistance from the national government.

This is a developing story, so be sure to review all our publications regularly to keep up with developments regarding Venezuela's commercial aviation market and CM’s route network.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
