COMAC's C919-600 High-Altitude “Plateau” Variant

DALLAS — COMAC’s C919-600 is a shorter version of China’s single-aisle jet. The program is making good progress as it reaches an important target.

The aircraft's outer wing box has passed inspection by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) and has been certified as safe to fly. This part was made by AVIC Xi’an Aircraft Industry Corporation (XAC) and is identified with manufacturer serial number (MSN) 00032.

This marks the first major structural delivery for the C919-600 prototype.

First Flight by 2027

This development indicates COMAC remains on schedule for the 2027 first flight of the airplane and 2028 start of commercial service. COMAC and Tibet Airlines developed the C919-600, named the "Plateau" variant, under an agreement signed in 2023.

The agreement’s primary purpose is to create an airplane capable of operating securely and efficiently at so-called "plateau" airports, where the higher elevation thins the air, reducing engine power and lift and, consequently, requiring longer runways for takeoff and landing.

Design Changes for High-Altitude Operating Conditions

To address the challenges of “Hot and High” environments, the C919-600 will feature a better thrust-to-weight ratio, improved aerodynamics, and more powerful engines than the current CFM International LEAP-1C.

With a shorter body than the original 38.9 meters, the plane is expected to carry between 138 and 153 passengers, making it a direct competitor to the Airbus A319neo—an aircraft famous for its dependable performance in similar situations.

Tibet Airlines: A Key Partner

Tibet Airlines operates from the 3,570-meter elevation of the Lhasa Airport. Tibet Airlines travels on Airbus A319ceo and A319neo aircraft and lifts off from some of the highest airports of the world, including Qamdo, which has an elevation of 4,311 meters above sea level.

An agreement entered into with COMAC will allow the company to test and enhance the C919-600. It will help China's ambitions of expanding domestic and regional air transportation by means of an aircraft designed to accommodate extreme environments.
