China Eastern Airlines (MU) has agreed to purchase 101 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft, valued at approximately US$15.8 billion at list prices, according to a filing cited by Reuters. Deliveries will occur in batches from 2028 to 2032.
The airline stated that the order will support fleet modernization and future capacity growth. The new aircraft are expected to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and operating costs.
Reuters described the purchase as A320neo aircraft, while Aviation Week reported the order includes a mix of A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR models. MU did not disclose the exact breakdown by variant.
Our Take
China Eastern’s order for 101 A320neo-family jets signals that major Chinese network carriers are preparing for a late-decade capacity cycle in which deliveries and efficiency, rather than demand, will be the main constraints.
Securing 2028–2032 delivery slots now helps mitigate ongoing supply constraints and enables China Eastern to expand or maintain market share with lower unit costs, as fuel volatility and emissions policies continue to pressure margins.
This agreement follows a 2022 MU order for 100 A320neo-family jets, highlighting ongoing demand among Chinese carriers for next-generation narrowbodies as domestic and intra-Asia networks expand.
