FORT WORTH — American Airlines (AA) and Miami-Dade County have announced a US$1 billion plan to redevelop the Gate D60 area and extend Concourse D at Miami International Airport (MIA). The project aims to modernize one of the airport’s most constrained boarding zones and enhance the overall passenger experience at AA’s largest international gateway.
The project will replace the current D60 configuration, which uses a single shared boarding space and several ground-level, outdoor operations, with a new three-level extension. This extension will feature 17 contact gates for larger regional and narrow-body aircraft, each with its own hold room to improve boarding flow and reduce congestion.

International Arrivals
The redesign will also streamline international travel by providing third-level connections to Concourse D’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility for arrivals. According to Miami Airport News, additional improvements include expanded concessions and an upgraded baggage system.
Construction is slated to break ground in 2027, with the expansion targeted for completion by 2030.
American stated that this investment supports its ongoing efforts to enhance the customer experience at MIA, where it operates approximately 400 daily departures. The airline plans its largest summer schedule to date, with up to 380 peak daily flights to 155 destinations in 45 countries.
This expansion demonstrates AA’s commitment to MIA as its primary international growth hub. The project addresses a long-standing bottleneck at D60, adds gate flexibility for larger aircraft, and offers smoother connections and a more premium, weather-protected boarding experience.
