MONTREAL — Air Canada (AC) announced a new nonstop link between Vancouver and Sapporo, expanding its Asia-Pacific network and reinforcing Vancouver’s role as a transpacific gateway.
The carrier confirmed it will launch nonstop service between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Sapporo New Chitose Airport (CTS), adding a new Japan destination to its Pacific portfolio.
The route launches in the upcoming schedule year, with flights timed to support seasonal demand between Western Canada and northern Japan. The following flight times are subject to change.
Air Canada’s Sapporo Schedule
Air Canada positions the new service to capture growing leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives demand, while also strengthening its Asia strategy from Vancouver, its primary western hub.
Network Context
Sapporo becomes the latest addition to Air Canada’s (AC) Japan network, complementing existing service to Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita. The airline continues to concentrate long-haul growth at Vancouver, where geography enables efficient transpacific routings and strong onward connectivity across Canada and the United States.
From an aviation perspective, the YVR–CTS pairing sits at the intersection of leisure traffic, winter tourism, and northern Asia connectivity — a profile well-suited to widebody operations and seasonal optimization.
Competitive Landscape
While Tokyo routes dominate Canada–Japan capacity, secondary Japanese cities such as Sapporo are increasingly attracting airlines seeking differentiated demand and less-congested slot environments. Air Canada’s (AC) move aligns with a broader trend among global carriers to deepen regional Asia coverage beyond primary hubs.
The Vancouver–Sapporo launch underscores AC’s intent to defend and expand its transpacific relevance, using Vancouver as a flexible bridge between North America and Asia while selectively growing into high-potential regional markets.
