WestJet, Virgin Atlantic Expands Loyalty Alliance, Connectivity

CALGARY — WestJet (WS) and Virgin Atlantic (VS) have expanded their relationship by adding mutual loyalty program benefits across their combined networks, allowing members of WestJet Rewards and Flying Club to earn and redeem points more broadly.

The update enhances connectivity between Canada, the United Kingdom, and long-haul destinations via London Heathrow (LHR), making Toronto (YYZ) a pivotal location connecting North America with VS's global network.

Enlarged Loyalty Integration

As the updated agreement permits, WS Rewards members will now be able to accrue on services operated by VS, including codeshare flights, whereas Flying Club members will be able to accrue on WS flights. The new frequent flyer alliance is the first since WS redesigned its loyalty system, and its purpose is to enhance flexibility without complicating redemption.

Network Connection through London-Heathrow

The alliance extends the travel endpoints beyond LHR, which can be redeemed on WS-sold flights operated by VS to destinations such as Dubai (DXB), Malé (MLE), Cape Town (CPT), and Johannesburg (JNB). The YYZ-LHR route is strategic for Canadian travellers, as it facilitates onward flights to VS's main hub.

Strategic Growth and Capacity

The joint venture is part of the overall trend toward loyalty-based partnerships rather than full joint ventures. VS will also use Airbus A350-1000 aircraft on the Toronto route to increase capacity, supporting network growth and premium long-haul carriers, and enhancing connectivity to the transatlantic market.
