Turkish Airlines Touches Down in Sydney, Australia

DALLAS — On Friday, November 28, at 6:18 p.m., the first nonstop flight between Istanbul and Sydney touched down on the Kingsford Smith runaway.

The service that links the European country and the world-famous Australian city will be operated with a frequency of four flights per week, giving a new chance of connectivity to the Australian who wants to fly across the globe to visit the beatitude of Europe.

A Boeing 777-300ER (TC-LJK) performed the flight, taking off from Istanbul Airport (IST) and landing in Kuala Lumpur to do the refueling process. Once finished, the aircraft departed KUL to reach Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) 8 hours later, landing in the afternoon.

In an SYD press release, the airline officers stated that by 2026, the goal is to replace the current long-range aircraft used to operate the flight with ultra-long-range ones capable of performing a single-leg flight.

Conversely, the Sydney hub has gained a new partnership granting Australians more than 350 destinations across Turkey, Europe, and the Americas. It is interesting that  TK is the second European carrier to operate in the SYD hub with British Airways (BA).

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport has a 38% share of the Australia-Europe air traffic market, linking the country with the most important European cities, responding to the fast-growing travel demand, and generating a great offer in the job market in the area of the airport.

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said, “We’re proud to welcome our 50th airline partner Turkish Airlines as they launch their inaugural flight to Sydney, strengthening our international network and offering passengers even more choice and connectivity to Europe and beyond through their extensive hub in Istanbul."

Exploring Airline History Volume I

David H. Stringer, the History Editor for AIRWAYS Magazine, has chronicled the story of the commercial aviation industry with his airline history articles that have appeared in AIRWAYS over two decades. Here, for the first time, is a compilation of those articles.

Subjects A through C are presented in this first of three volumes. Covering topics such as the airlines of Alaska at the time of statehood and Canada's regional airlines of the 1960s, the individual histories of such carriers as Allegheny, American, Braniff, and Continental are also included in Volume One.
