‍DALLAS — In a redefining moment, Newcastle Airport (NTL) has installed its first aerobridge, marking a key step in its development as an official international port of entry to Australia in August 2025. 

Airports International reports that the structure is the first of its kind for the airport. The 31-tonne, 20-meter structure will enable passengers to board and disembark from inside the terminal, providing protection from the elements and enhanced accessibility for all travelers.

Andrew Warrender, interim CEO, described the installation as an emotional milestone representing years of planning, construction, and steadfast support from the Hunter Region and beyond. Beyond infrastructure, he described the aerobridge as a physical exclamation point to a future of global connectivity.

Expansion Details

The expansion also incorporates an almost-finished international terminal with enhanced baggage infrastructure for handling Code-E and Code-C aircraft. 

Notable improvements include polished concrete flooring on the ground level, carpeting on the upper level, thermostat-controlled bathrooms, and various features designed specifically to enhance the passenger experience.

As part of a larger modernization project for the airport, both the new terminal and the existing terminal buildings will be fitted with a complete fire sprinkler system. Additionally, a new car rental building is under development. 

The transformation will create a world-class facility that will serve as the Hunter Region's gateway to the world, Warrender says.
