DALLAS — Binter Canarias (NT) is set to upgrade its fleet by ordering four ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft powered by PW12XT engines.
The flag carrier of the Spanish autonomous community of the Canary Islands, based on the grounds of Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) in Telde, Gran Canaria and Tenerife North Airport (TFN), San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain, placed the firm order at the end of 2024, and has five more options for the type.
This news was unveiled at the ATR's 2024 results conference, during which the French manufacturer presented the orders for replacing the aging ATR-600 with brand-new state-of-the-art models equipped with the latest avionics, systems, and power plant.
"Our investment in these new ATR 72-600 aircraft reflects our dedication to providing passengers with the highest levels of comfort and reliability," stated Rodolfo Núñez, President of Binter. "The efficiency of the PW127XT engines, specifically optimized for ATR’s turboprops, allows us to set new benchmarks in fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, and operational costs, reinforcing our commitment to responsible aviation."
The airline now consists of 26 ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft carrying roughly 5 million passengers annually. With about 210 daily departures, the airline enhances connectivity within the Canary Islands.
Since delivering its first ATR 72-200 in 1989, Binter, based in Gran Canaria, has consistently demonstrated its commitment to comfortable and efficient regional air travel. The airline aims to be as efficient and profitable as possible.
Commitment to Innovation, Sustainability
Binter has 10 Embraer 195-E2 jets in addition to the ATR 72. The ATR 72 remains the preferred choice for many airlines for short-haul routes, thanks to its short takeoff and landing capabilities, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced carbon footprint.
The latest ATR 72-600 model has cutting-edge assisted navigation technology, which enhances flight safety and operational performance. Features such as five cockpit LCD digital displays, an optimized cabin layout, slimmer seat designs for maximized passenger space, and expanded baggage compartments contribute to an enhanced travel experience.
As for the the PW127XT engine series, it is Pratt & Whitney Canada's latest innovation in regional turboprop engines, designed to set new standards for operating economics and sustainability in regional aviation. These engines offer significant improvements over their predecessors:
- Efficiency: The PW127XT provides at least 3% improvement in fuel efficiency.
- Maintenance: It offers 40% extended time on wing, bringing engine overhaul intervals to 20,000 hours, and a 20% reduction in direct maintenance costs
European airlines like EasyJet (U2) and Ryanair (FR) have modernized their fleets with the Boeing 737 MAX and A320neo. With shorter flights to the Portuguese and Spanish islands, NT’s ATR option carries more passengers while reducing fuel, maintenance, crew, and travel expenses.
Long are the days when airlines would operate their wide-body aircraft for shorter island flights.
