MIAMI — A new Chinese carrier will begin flying to Vancouver on December 30, 2016, marking its first entry into North America. Beijing Capital Airlines will operate a three-weekly service between Hangzhou and Vancouver via Qingdao. The Vancouver Airport Authority said.

“We are thrilled Beijing Capital Airlines has chosen YVR as its first entry point into North America,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of the Vancouver Airport Authority in a news release.

This is the sixth airline to run connecting flights between mainland China and Vancouver. Richmond called it a “true testament to YVR’s position as a connecting hub to the Asia-Pacific region, and to Vancouver’s competitiveness in attracting new carriers.”

Airport officials say it’s the second new airline to land at YVR this year. Last July, XiamenAir launched flights to Canada’s West Coast Asia-Pacific gateway.

Beijing Capital Airlines, a leisure airline, commenced operations in 2010 and is headquartered in the Chinese capital. It currently operates flights out of Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Xi’an and Hangzhou as its core bases.

The new airline will join Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Sichuan Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines, which all fly from China to YVR. In addition, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, and EVA Air fly from Hong Kong and Taiwan to Vancouver.
