MIAMI —  Dublin, Ireland-based aircraft lessor SMBC Aviation Capital has signed an order for 80 Boeing 737 MAX 8s in a deal valued at more than $8.5 billion.

The order, signed during a ceremony today in Tokyo, is the single largest for 737 MAXs from a leasing company.  SMBC Aviation Capital has 180 Boeing airplanes in its portfolio with 95 airline customers in more than 40 countries.

The deal marks the 50th customer Boeing has signed up for the 737 MAX  and brings the order book to 2,294 orders from 47 customers. Citing its Current Market Outlook, Boeing forecast that airlines will need more than 25,600 single-aisle airplanes like the 737 MAX in the next 20 years. Airlines with 737 MAX orders include Aeroflot, Etihad, Hainan Airlines, Copa Airlines and Kenya Airways.
