MIAMI — Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet has taken delivery of the world’s first Bombardier Q400 with the new high-density cabin that allows up to 90 passengers to fly in the turboprop aircraft.
In September, Bombardier announced an order for 50 of its high-density Q400 turboprop aircraft coming from SpiceJet. The deal was valued up to US$1.7 billion.
According to the Canadian manufacturer, the purchase agreement included 25 Q400s with purchase rights for 25 additional aircraft, all of which will be fitted with 90 seats—instead of the 78 seat layout that the existing Q400s are equipped with.
These turboprops will join a fleet of 36 Boeing 737NGs and 22 Q400s. SpiceJet’s fleet averages 7.5 years of age.
The Indian carrier currently operates 412 daily flights to 54 destinations, including 47 domestic and seven international.
“We are excited to induct the 90-seat Q400 aircraft into our fleet,” said Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet.
“The additional seats and performance improvements will result in substantial reduction in unit costs and also we will enable us to address our market needs in the regional space,” he added.
New Life For The Q400
The enhanced capacity on Bombardier’s best-selling plane is giving a new, second life to the Q400 family.
“This is a very important milestone for the Q400 aircraft program because the 90-seat option demonstrates the increased profitability potential that this unique turboprop has to offer,” said Colin Bole, SVP Commercial at Bombardier.
“The increased passenger capacity allows 15% reduction of seat cost compared to the previous standard Q400 aircraft and provides an enormous benefit for airlines,” Bole added.
