MIAMI — Delta Air Lines has added a new feature to its luggage tracking capability on its Fly Delta app, which enables passengers to receive push notifications while tracking their bag’s progress throughout its journey on.

According to the airline, a quick note will let customers know when their bag is loaded onto an aircraft, which carousel it will arrive at for pickup and more. The new addition relies on the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking feature, exclusive to Delta Air Lines, and which allows travelers to track in real time the location of their luggage.

A recent study from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed that an industry-wide global RFID solution could reduce the number of mishandled bags by up to 25 percent by 2022.

The study, conducted with Global IT provider SITA, found that a global RFID solution could save the air travel industry $3 billion over the next seven years.

Delta currently employs RFID technology in 25 airports in the United States, and plans to bring this number to 84 in the coming months.

The new tracking method complies with IATA Resolution 753, which requires airlines to track all baggage from start to finish beginning in June 2018.
