I remember it like it was yesterday: Twenty years ago I was in a Tulsa, Oklahoma hobby shop with my best friend, oddly enough on the day of his wedding. To take our minds off the big event later in the day we stopped into Hobby Lobby to look at some models of cars. At this point, my airline “hobby” which dated back to when I was six years old had taken a back seat to cars, girls, the TV biz, and did I mention girls? While looking for the latest issue of a favorite UK magazine “Cars”, I stumbled across a magazine bearing the Sun King logo of Miami based National Airlines on the cover of a magazine called “Airways”. My long-dormant hobby was immediately, like Vesuvius, instantly and explosively reignited. From that moment on, I went on a binge; reacquainting myself with every facet of the airline industry. This meant collecting every copy of “Airways” and “Airliners Magazine”, every book I could get my hands on, buying every model in sight, ancient memorabilia…well, you get the idea.In 2003 in a rare time of my life when I decided to take time off from my work in the television industry, I created Airchive.com as an online webseum based around my collection with the hopes of creating a bricks and mortar museum one day. Particularly in the last few years, Airchive has evolved into an enormously popular, respected, credible, and day-and-date source of news, information, features, and analysis thanks to our stellar editorial team under the leadership of Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren.
Over the last twenty years, “Airways Magazine” has outlived many of its competitors to become the #1 airline enthusiast magazine in the world under the incredibly passionate and visionary John Wegg and his remarkable team of editors, columnists, and photographers. For the 219 issues of “Airways” between 1994 and 2014, some 400 authors and columnists produced more than 2,500 features covering almost every facet of air transport from all over the world, comprising two and a half a million words and around 20,000 photos.
During Wegg’s tenure at Airways International Inc, he also edited the monthly ‘ACAR: Airline & Commercial Aircraft Report’ for five years, and produced and published eight ‘Airways Classics’ plus twelve books, including his own monumental, medal-winning ‘Caravelle: The Complete Story/Caravelle: la française de la jet set’.
My relationship began with “Airways” when I wrote my first article for them, covering the Airbus A380 inaugural flight onboard in October 2007. Since then I have written for them many times from the 787, A350XWB, Cseries rollout, AA 777-300 first flights, the stories of Everett, Renton, Boeing Archives, Dreamliner Gallery, and many more. It’s been a privilege working very closely with John Wegg and his team. They simply make every story better. During this time, Airchive and “Airways” formed a cross-promotional and editorial alliance which we and our respective audiences have both benefited from. John has been tireless in pursuit of creating not only the biggest, but the best publication in its field. However, after twenty years he needed a break. Though as you’ll see later, Mr. Wegg isn’t quite finished just yet.
In 2012, John and I began discussing plans for what “Airways” and Airchive 3.0 might look like. The future would entail a fresh breeze of new leadership, a shift in editorial, and a powerful online / mobile / digital strategy under the aegis of a new ownership and publisher. As we embarked on this journey, I fortuitously met Enrique Perrella, a writer for “Airliners Magazine”, an MBA with a degree in aviation management from ERAU, and a pilot. We met onboard the American Airlines Boeing 777-300ER inaugural to Sao Paulo in January 2013. In Enrique, I immediately met a kindred spirit. He was not only an aviation enthusiast, but a competitive man of action. Like me, he stayed awake the entire overnight flight and next day up to file his story. Between live tweeting, photographing, and writing, we had a chance to bond over scotch, adrenaline, and this crazy business we both love. Enrique wrote some of our most memorable features including a recent behind the scenes look at Korean Airlines and the ANA 787 re-inaugural. Flash forward to today: “Airways” 20th Anniversary and Airchive’s relaunch, and together we have big news to share. On March 2nd “Airways Magazine”, the globally distributed magazine covering the world of commercial aviation changed ownership under Enrique.
Simultaneously, Airchive and “Airways” are taking their long-standing cross-promotional and editorial relationship into a much deeper, long-term alliance.The consumer facing brand will be under the “Airways” name, though the Airchive brand will continue to exist in historical pieces on the site and publication. Airchive will operate “Airways” digital assets online, mobile, and social channels, and contribute frequent content to the publication. The Airchive team will also contribute significant content to Airways online. As part of this, I will join “Airways” as associate editor and its editorial board. Enrique will assume the same position with Airways Online. Both companies working very closely together will be based in Miami.
The editorial direction will continue to evolve to engage commercial aviation industry stakeholders & employees and frequent flyers, while still appealing to the enthusiast. Our online, mobile, social, and print distribution will increase exponentially. We expect these changes to begin sometime later in the 2nd quarter of 2014. Veteran Aviation Reporter Enrique Perrella Named Publisher/Editor-in-Chief
Airchive.com to Take Control of Airways’ Digital Assets: Website, Social Media and Mobile Presence and Rebrand as Airways
Miami, Florida – March 12, 2014 – After 20 years in publication, Airways Magazine (the flagship title of Airways International, Inc.), has announced several changes that will lead its aviation coverage into an exciting new decade. Veteran aviation reporter Enrique Perrella has been named Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, and the magazine has formed a strategic alliance with Airchive.com, which will take control of Airways’ digital, website, social media and mobile presence under one powerful combined Airways brand. These changes will also take Airways Magazine into America’s commercial aviation epicenter, with new headquarters in Miami, where Airchive.com is also based.
Recognized as the leading newsstand publication in its field, Airways is currently distributed through newsstands in North America and 35 nations worldwide, reaching subscribers in more than 60 countries. Today’s announcement was made by the magazine’s founder, John Wegg, who plans to continue his responsibility for Airways’ historical articles, special editions and projects, while working closely with Enrique and Airchive.com to ensure a seamless transition.
“I have been the editor-in-chief of Airways since its launch in 1994. In a vibrant age of multimedia publishing, now is the time to hand over the reigns to a new generation,” he explained. “Enrique has the necessary passion, business acumen and aviation experience to take the enterprise to ever-higher flight levels, and Airchive.com is the natural choice to operate, transform and enrich Airways’ entire online presence, while continuing to provide an unmatched historical edge to the magazine.”

Perrella takes the wheel at Airways effective with the June 2014 issue in conjunction with the formidable Airchive.com site, which has quickly become one of the industry’s leading aviation news portals. Already reaching more than 200K unique monthly visitors, Airchive.com will merge its existing readership and social media presence with Airways in launching a new Airways portal with a built-in social media audience of more than 30K Twitter followers and 35K Facebook likes combined.
The new site and existing magazine will share content, contributors and promotion efforts, going beyond the Aviation Enthusiast audience, as Airchive.com has already done, to reach aviation industry stakeholders and employees, as well as Frequent Travelers. Airchive.com founder/editor-in-chief Chris Sloan will join the magazine as Associate Editor, and Perrella will join the new site as Associate Editor, each playing a crucial role in shaping future coverage. Airchive.com’s co-editor-in-chief Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren and its team of correspondents will also contribute to Airways Magazine, which—according to Perrella—will gradually introduce new sections aiming to showcase the very best of commercial aviation. The Airchive.com brand name will live on as a feature section in the magazine and online.
Ultimately, the combined Airways/Airchive media presence will showcase the very best of the world’s commercial aviation industry, reach a much broader audience and take advantage of today’s technology and the extensive reach Airchive.com has managed to seize over the last years.

Enrique Perrella is an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University alumnus who obtained his Bachelor degree in Aviation Business Administration in 2010 from the Daytona Beach Campus. In 2013, he received his Masters Degree in Aviation Business Administration from LUISS Business School in Rome, Italy, and also holds all Private, Instrument and Commercial Pilot ratings with more than 500 flight hours.
Before joining Airways, Perrella spent seven years living between Europe, South America and the US. His experience in the publication industry began in 2008 as an Assistant Editor for Airliners Magazine, where he covered events such as the delivery flight of Turkish Airlines’ first 777-300ER and ANA’s Boeing 787 Inaugural Flight from San Jose to Tokyo, among others. He has also covered all editions of Le Bourget, Farnborough and ILA since 2009, interviewing airline executives and key people from the industry. Perrella has also held Senior Correspondent positions at numerous international publications, such as Air Transport News and Airchive.com.
