LONDON – Rome Ciampino airport has been evacuated as a precaution after smoke was found in a basement area.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: “The airport has been closed as a precaution”.

Flights have been cancelled and all operations at the airport have been suspended. According to local media reports, law enforcement officers and firefighters have arrived at the scene.

In a tweet from the airport, they are advising travels to contact their airlines prior to arriving at the airport to find out the status of their flight. It is believed that they are allowing the use of the facilities in the Arrival area, however, the departures terminal area remains closed.

The airport has been closed for around 2 hours and many flights have had server delays put onto them, with some flights operated by carrier Ryanair Being canceled.

The airport has since being partily reopend with the airport now operating normally for General Aviation and arriving traffic, however, the departure area remains closed after a fire which was found in a basement was put out by first responders.

The fire has seen many delays and cancellations from operator Ryanair which has told passengers to check their emails regarding the status of their flights before they arrive at the airport.
