LONDON — Iceland-based WOW Air placed an order for 4 Airbus A321 aircraft today at the Farnborough Airshow, marking the low cost carrier (LCC)’s first order placed directly with Airbus. The four additional A321s will fund WOW Air’s aggressive growth ambitions from its Keflavik hub.

WOW Air is a rival to Icelandic flag carrier Icelandair, and mimics the latter’s strategy of offering cheap transfer flights between North America and Europe that leverage Keflavik’s geographic location. WOW is the smaller of the two, with a fleet of 11 Airbus aircraft (2 A320, 6 A321, 3 A330-300s) serving 30 destinations across, Europe, Canada, and the United States.

The carrier’s most recent development has been to launch long distance flights to the west coast of the United States with 342-seat Airbus A330-300 wide body aircraft while the added A321s (WOW now has 5 additional A321s on order) will be used for more bread and butter routes to the US East Coast/Midwest and Western Europe. WOW air is also widely expected to top up its existing order for 2 A320neo family aircraft (1 A320neo, 1 A321neo).

“We are thrilled to be adding these brand new A321 aircraft to our fast growing fleet.  WOW Air is becoming one of the leading low-cost long-haul airline in the World and we look forward to expanding even further through our successful partnership with Airbus,” said Skúli Mogensen, Founder and CEO of WOW Air.
