MIAMI— Porter Airlines confirmed yesterday it is launching a winter seasonal flight from Toronto City (YTZ) to Melbourne (MLB). Melbourne International Airport had already announced a few weeks ago it would welcome a new international airline but did not mention any name.

The Saturday-only flight will initially run from December 19th until April 30th, 2016. The flight from Toronto to Melbourne is scheduled to depart at 9:35AM and arrive at 12:45Pm. The return flight will leave at 1:35PM and arrive at 4:45PM. The flight will be operated by a Bombardier Q400 with 74 seats. The airline will only sell a maximum of 50 seats due to weight restriction as the aircraft will have to carry more fuel to fly to Florida. The longest runway at Toronto Island Airport is 3,988 feet, which is less than the required runway length for a fully-loaded Q400 take off.

“We see this as a great opportunity to meet current requests that we have for Florida flights and demonstrate the demand that exists for Porter to serve the state in a more meaningful way long term,”said the President and CEO of Porter Airlines, Robert Deluce.
