MIAMI – Italy has a new chance to fly to the US. NEOS (NO), already active with cargo flights, will extend service to passengers twice per week. NO had applied for rights in January 2021 but limited only to freight services.

Now, the new passenger flights, operating between Milan-Malpensa (MXP and New York ( JFK), have officially obtained approval from the US Department of Transportation (DoT) to operate passenger flights to the United States. This positive development opens new horizons to NO with the possibility to access more diversified businesses and worldwide destinations.

To avoid travel restrictions and quarantine on both sides of the destination, the flights will be “Covid Tested” type and planned to start in the second part of June with the objective to enter a central and revenue-producing sector which, in 2019, counted for over 1ml passengers while, at the same time, new possible US destinations are being contemplated.

The flight schedule is set for a departure from MXP on Thursday and Sunday at 12:20 for arrival in JFK at 14:50 on the same day. the return service shall leave JFK at 17:50, same day, and arrive in MXP at 07:20 of the following day. All times are local.

Comments from NEOS CEO

Carlo Stradiotti, NEOS CEO, commented on the announcement by declaring, “With this first route, we start to structure the flows between the two countries and to give life to a safe travel experience, on last generation aircraft equipped with every comfort and with an innovative and quality service. This is the starting point but we are already thinking of increasing to three weekly frequencies from 2022 as well as evaluating other routes.

NEOS has an already established experience in “Covid Free” flights having assured operation between MXP and Nanjing (NKG) since November 2020 by applying a health protocol that permits travel without the hindrance of quarantine at arrival. Moreover, NO is taking part in the trial of the IATA “TravelPass”, a system designed to speed up procedures at boarding and arrival.

The airline, created in 2002, has followed an incisive and constant growth path and has transported 2ml passengers in 2019 creating revenue of US$550m (€466m). Its lean and flexible structure has permitted the airline to go thru the recent critical times, without ceasing its operations but starting new activities, including cargo, rescue, and humanitarian flights to deliver medical supplies.

NEOS operates a fleet of 15 aircraft on a worldwide network of 50 destinations and performs cargo flights to China, Korea, Canada, and the US. During the pandemic, NO has brought home people over 40,000 people in 68 countries and has carried over 4,000 tonnes of emergency supplies, badly needed in Italy.
